International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme at Trinity

In 1994 Trinity Episcopal School became the first authorized International Baccalaureate World School in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. Trinity is still the only independent school in the area to offer the IB Diploma Programme, a course of study designed for highly motivated students in the 11th and 12th grades.

At Trinity, IB diploma candidates and IB course candidates are fully engaged in the life of the school; they play sports, serve in student government, participate in the arts, and join in club activities. Choices within Trinity’s  IB curriculum give students the opportunity to craft their course load, and they can both pursue and enhance their individual areas of interest.
With our mission to help students discover their path, develop their talents and strengthen their character within a dynamic academic community, Trinity provides a good home for the IB Diploma Programme and enhances the added benefits of an IB education.

What IB Offers

The aim of all International Baccalaureate programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

To do this, IB emphasizes a unique mix of intellectual challenge, intercultural understanding and respect, self-awareness and independent research. The program prepares students for educational success in college and for a life of meaning and purpose in an ever-changing world.

The global administration of the IB program allows candidates to be measured against an international standard.  An IB diploma awarded by Trinity is the same awarded to accomplished students throughout the world.

Completion of the full Diploma Programme or of individual IB courses can also give students advanced standing in college and an advantage in the college admission process.

IB Diploma Programme Merit Scholarship

Each year, Trinity awards a full, four year merit scholarship to a rising freshman.  To apply for the scholarship, students must have enthusiasm for the program  and  indicate interest and choose the combination Entrance and IB Scholarship Test within the online portion of the application. These questions are asked under the Testing section just prior to the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire. Information regarding the scholarship is communicated to our applicants along with their letter of acceptance in March. To learn more, visit the Admission Process page.

Who is Eligible

Juniors and seniors at Trinity with the required coursework, prerequisites, recommendations, motivation and commitment may participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.  Since no admission test is required, students have until their sophomore year to decide their level of participation.

Students intending to pursue the full IB diploma typically plan their curriculum sequence in their freshman year. This enables them to take courses in preparation for the actual IB courses undertaken during their junior and senior years. However, after freshman year students may still be able to enter the full program.

Additionally, qualified students can choose to be an IB course candidate, taking individual IB courses or the distinctive features of the IB core.
