"A Place Where I Can Be Myself"

Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities helps schools stand up to prejudice and bullying, build communities of trust, belonging
The Trinity community welcomed Jonathan Zur and Charm Bullard back to campus on Monday, November 1 from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC). For over 85 years, the organization has worked to foster intercultural and interfaith dialogue and “help schools, businesses and communities across Virginia achieve success through inclusion.” 

Speaking in Chapel, the pair encouraged students to stand up to prejudice and bullying in their daily lives, as a way to maintain the foundation of a welcoming school community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Zur encouraged students to begin by stepping out of their comfort zone to meet and engaging with others who share different backgrounds, opinions and identities.

“Each of us has a choice,” said Zur. “Each of us can say, I’m going to stand up to prejudice, particularly at these early forms, so that it doesn't escalate,” he said. “This has the power… to ensure that every person here can walk into Trinity every single day and think to themselves, 'I belong here. This is a place where I can be myself. This is a place where I fit in. This is a place where I feel comfortable being who I am.’”
