  • Talkology

    Rising 7 – 9th graders
    Monday, July 7 – Friday, July 11 (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) 
    In this one week course, students will learn the basics of oral communication including the importance of body language and other nonverbal cues, how to prepare and write successful speeches, and how to deliver speeches in a confident and charismatic way. We will watch and study professional speeches and deliver multiple short speeches. This course is recommended for students in grades 7-9, especially for students who simply want a way to enrich their public speaking skills or boost their confidence in speaking in public settings.
  • Ink and Imagination

    Rising 7 – 9th graders
    Monday, July 7 – Friday, July 11 (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) 
    Calling all creative writing enthusiasts! In this one week course, students will read, critique, and compose original short fiction. Students will work on strategies to avoid writer’s block and learn new ways to find inspiration for brainstorming and writing. Through peer editing, students will discover, expand, and refine their own skills and voice in short story writing. This course is recommended for students grades 7-9 that enjoy the creative process and writing for fun.
  • Reading Comprehension and Annotation

    Rising 8th – 12th graders
    Monday, July 21 – Friday, July 25 (9:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.) 
    In this one week course, students will review best annotation and note-taking practices while reading and learn effective reading strategies to increase understanding and enjoyment. Some of the skill focuses for the week will include identifying main idea and textual evidence, critical thinking, and making inferences. Students are encouraged to bring their summer reading books to use as a resource for this class. This class is designed for students grades 8-12, especially those who need a boost in reading comprehension.

About the Instructor

Meredith Sizemore teaches English 8, 9, Public Speaking, and Creative Writing. She has been an English teacher for 12 years, teaching both middle and high school, in both public and private schools. Sizemore has a master's of teaching from JMU and considers herself a lifelong learner, who is continually in awe of the dynamic nature of language and communication and sharing that connection with her students.
