Trinity Recognized as Active RVA Certified School

Students and faculty benefit from wide range of physical education, outdoor and athletic programs
For the fifth year in a row, Trinity has been recognized as an Active RVA Certified School by the Sports Backers organization. By achieving this recognition, Trinity joins other schools in the Richmond area in finding ways to “maximize their health and wellness through regular physical activity” while also providing “meaningful pathways for the whole school community to get moving and get healthy.”

Trinity goes above and beyond traditional athletic programs by providing both an extensive strength training program, along with ever more ways for students and faculty to be active on an off campus. Several student-run clubs, such as backyard sports, robotics and Students for Environmental Action, encourage students to be active both on and off campus. Trinity also boasts Richmond’s preeminent high school outdoor program and several volunteer opportunities to get students moving throughout the year.

“Philosophically we support active engagement in our community, and this takes many forms, said Head of Community Engagement Life Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00. “We have a campus embedded in the natural habitat of the James River. Consequently, we have an incredible Outdoor Program that allows students to explore nontraditional activities such as rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, standup paddle boarding, and mountain biking all within the confines of the city of Richmond.”   

Trinity is one of only a few schools to offer such robust opportunities for outdoor adventure and education. Beginning in students’ freshman year, they set off for a camping trip which sets the stage for future opportunities within the program year-round or on special trips. “Students can participate in twice-annual hikes in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia, and our Global Engagement Program has added backcountry skiing trips equipped with an avalanche-safety course for those wishing to learn more about snow safety and incorporate this into an active lifestyle,” said Weiler.

In addition to getting students engaged in an active lifestyle, Trinity also supports an active faculty. Faculty and staff are encouraged to get active alongside students on hikes, with teams or in service opportunities.

Weiler added: “We also offer opportunities for service in the outdoors with volunteer efforts and education at Riverrock, grade-level clean-up days in the surrounding neighborhood and along the river, and supporting such events as the Richmond marathon by helping lay out the course the night prior.  These are both active in the sense of movement and also active in being volunteers within the greater community.”

Active RVA was launched by Sports Backers in 2012.
