Regional musical ensembles tap three Trinity students
Three Trinity musicians have been selected to participate in two prestigious regional musical ensembles this winter. Elizabeth Ray ’25, violinist, and Silvie Dow ’25, harpist, were named to the 2022 Central Regional Orchestra, an elite performing group. Ray earned a top-ten score among violins, while Sylvie Dow is first chair in the harp section. Cameron Walker ’24, trumpeter, has been named to the 2022 VCU Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band.

Central Regional Orchestra is held each year as a way to challenge and showcase talented and motivated string players in the area. The auditions are open to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in Richmond, Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield public and private schools, as well as homeschooled students. “Each year, hundreds of young musicians prepare their audition material, including scales, excerpts, and sight-reading,” said Kimberly Ryan, Trinity strings teacher. “The Orchestra is chosen by blind audition, and less than half of those students who audition are able to participate in the event.” This year the Orchestra performed five pieces of music in a concert at Matoaca High School on Saturday, February 5.

According to the VCU Arts website:  “The Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band is made up of some of the most talented high school jazz students from the region. Alumni of this ensemble have gone on to major in music at such programs as VCU, Temple, Miami, The New School, Berklee, and at other institutions throughout the U.S.; have studied at summer jazz programs such as the Vail and Berklee Jazz Workshops; and have successfully pursued careers in other disciplines. Each year the group is selected through auditions that are held in January.” The experience culminates with two concerts, one held at Trinity’s annual Jazz Festival on April 23, 2022, and the second at VCU on May 7, 2022.

Congratulations again to these three talented Titans!
