Meet our Head Coaches

Fall Athletic Program Heads

  • Sam Mickens

    Football
    Sam Mickens has been program head for Titan Football since 2012. Mickens is a former Division III college football player at Montclair State University and previously worked and coached at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, NJ. Under his direction, Titan Football won two DII VISAA state championships (2014 and 2015), then followed that up by winning a Division I VISAA state championship in 2021 and 2022; Mickens was named state coach of the year in all those same seasons. Coach Mickens brings a wealth of knowledge about the sport and the college recruiting process. Coach Mickens also serves in the development office at Trinity. 


  • Brian Phillips

    Boys Soccer
    Brian Phillips has been at Trinity for parts of five decades. He has been the program head for boys soccer since 1996, during which time the team has earned a reputation for its strong character, earning the Prep League’s Sportsmanship Award in many seasons. In 2018, he guided the boys to an unlikely VISAA State Tournament run, where the 11th-seeded Titans advanced to the semifinals. Then in 2022, Coach Phillips guided the boys to state runner up. He was the first ever recipient of VISAA’s Charlie Blair Award for excellence in coaching. Coach Phillips also serves as the theater director and head of campus life. Phillips and his wife, Alice are proud parents of two Trinity alumni, Griffin ’18 and Madelyn ’15.
  • Joanna Pfluger

    Girls Tennis
    After an esteemed amateur career that saw her ranked as high as No. 3 in Europe and a college career at the University of Richmond, where she battled to become the No. 1 line, Pfluger worked at Salisbury Country Club before launching her own coaching business, Rainbow Tennis. She is the director of tennis at Southampton Recreation Association. Plunger describes her coaching style as enthusiastic and spirited.

    “Tennis can feel like a lonely individual sport, especially at the highest levels,” says Pfluger. “But I love the team culture of high school and college tennis. I want our girls to be intense, emotional and spirited – and to play not just for themselves, but for their team and for their school.”


  • Margie Vaughan Snead ’85

    Field Hockey and Girls Lacrosse
    Margie Snead graduated from William & Mary in 1989 and currently serves as Trinity’s director of admission and program head for both the girls lacrosse and field hockey teams. While at William & Mary, Snead was a four-year contributor to both the soccer and lacrosse teams and finished her senior season as a team captain in both sports. Snead was a two-time All-American lacrosse player (1988 and 1989) and earned a spot on the US National Team in 1989. Inducted into William & Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012, Snead is one of 17 W&M lacrosse players to earn multiple All-American honors. 

    Trinity Field Hockey has won five LIS Championships in a row along with VISAA state titles in 2015 and 2018  Coach Snead has several Coach of the Year accolades.

    Coach Snead ’85, her husband Billy Snead ’85 and two daughters, Annie Snead ’16 and Sally Snead ’19, are all Trinity alums.
  • Liz Ragland

    Volleyball
    With over 30 years of coaching, Liz Ragland brings to Trinity a wealth of knowledge in the Richmond volleyball scene. While at Monacan High School for 13 years, Ragland built the volleyball program into one of the most popular at the school, eventually competing for regional titles. Ragland has coached many now competing at the college level, and her players describe her as tough but knowledgeable. She looks forward to preparing Titan Volleyball to compete at the highest level, and she has been impressed with the level of competition in the League of Independent Schools. “In the LIS, everybody is good,” she says. “So we've got to go in and play our hardest every single match.” Ragland says she is grateful for the solid foundation that was laid by previous coaches in the program, and she is excited to continue the strong growth and development of Trinity athletes. 

Winter Athletic Program Heads

  • Andrew Blazar

    Boys Basketball
    Blazar comes to Trinity with a great deal of experience as the head coach of the boys basketball program at James River High School for the past five years with prior positions at The Steward School and Glen Allen High School. During his time at James River, Blazar led the Rapids to their first ever Regional Championship and two state tournament appearances. He was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019. 
     
    Blazar graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in finance while also serving as a student manager for the basketball team. He has also taught math for the past eleven years. Blazar currently lives in Midlothian with his wife, Kelsey, and their daughter, Isla Kate.
     
    “I feel honored and privileged to have been selected as the seventh program head for boys basketball in the school’s history,” said Blazar. “The mission of the school aligns perfectly with my personal and professional values. I am committed to the school and its goals of running a first class program that performs both on the court, as well as in the classroom and in the community.”
  • Evan Leach

    Indoor Track
    Evan Leach takes over as the Track and Field coach after being the sprints coach since 2023. He ran cross country and track at VCU (2018-2022) and Richmond (2023) at the collegiate level. Before Trinity, Leach served as the assistant cross country/track & field coach at University of Richmond and as the sprints coach at Glen Allen High School. Evan is originally from Fredericksburg VA. He has a degree in anthropology and a master’s in management/liberal arts from the University of Richmond. He trains with former American record holder Kiera D'Amato and still competes in long distance and marathon.  "I couldn’t be more excited to be back coaching at Trinity in a new role,” said Leach. “I’m looking forward to building a team culture that not only creates successful athletes, but also an environment that each athlete can thrive in."
  • Adam Lonon

    Girls Basketball
    Adam Lonon has led the girls basketball program since 2017. In his first two seasons his team has captured back-to-back Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament (TDIT) Championships and made it to the VISAA State Quarterfinals twice. As a player, Lonon was a standout at the Steward School before playing Division I basketball at Virginia Military Institute. Lonon coached the girls basketball team at Steward from 2011-2016. A certified strength and conditioning coach, Lonon supports the Titan athletic program by running training exercises for boys and girls teams across all three seasons. In the offseason, Lonon runs an independent basketball skills academy, Adam Lonon Basketball.
  • Tim Johnson

    Swim and Dive
    Tim Johnson took over as Trinity swim and dive program head in 2018, following five years as an assistant coach to both Alice Phillips and Ashley Tremper. Coach Johnson has worked hard to implement and maintain the unique culture of the Trinity swim team that prides itself on fervent team spirit. He earned his BA at Virginia Military Institute and a master’s in education from Regent University. In the swimming world, he has served as Head Coach at Richmond Christian, Settlers Landing and, most recently, the Watermill Waveriders Swimming Club. He currently teaches Social Studies at Midlothian High School.

  • Christy Darlington

    Softball
    Christy Darlington has been at Trinity since 2004 and has been softball program head since 2010. Darlington has coached locally in the Storm and Rampage travel organizations. With a focus on a team culture of mutual respect, camaraderie and athletic growth, Darlington hopes to improve on a No. 6 finish in the state from the 2019 season, the highest since she took over the team. In 2023 Christy lead the Titans to an incredible LIS championship, culminating in a top 3 placement for the Titans over the last three years. She was also named Coach of the year for the league. 

    Darlington is a graduate of Longwood University, where she studied biology and psychology, both subjects she teaches here at Trinity. She is the proud parent of two Trinity alumni, Becca ’10 and Shelby ’12.
  • Rick Hamlin ’96 

    Girls Soccer 
    Now in his 20th year teaching at Trinity, Rick Hamlin has headed the girls soccer program since 2005. In each of the last 12 years, the Trinity girls team has advanced to the state tournament (one of only two programs to accomplish this), and has had a winning record each year. Coach Hamlin seeks to foster a program with a family atmosphere. He stresses individual skill development, competitiveness, character development, and fun. Coach Hamlin was named LIS coach of the year in 2008, 2015 and 2019. 

    A graduate of the University of Virginia, Hamlin teaches classes in western civilization and US history and views athletics as a vehicle for education. He is also head coach for both boys JV soccer and boys varsity basketball. A member of Trinity’s Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete, Coach Hamlin was a three-year varsity starter on the TES soccer team. He still enjoys playing in an adult recreational league.
  • Chris Gerrity

    Baseball
    Gerrity was a standout baseball player at Virginia Commonwealth University. Upon graduating he has grown Richmond Baseball Academy West for 20-plus years into the powerhouse it is now. Gerrity currently coaches the 15U VA Seminoles. RBA West specializes in individual training, advanced hitting and infield instruction and placing young athletes in the best fit to continue their baseball career at the next level. For his part, Gerrity is eager to step into that mentorship role for each of his players and to support Trinity’s mission of challenging each student to discover their paths. “I'm very excited to be a part of the community here at Trinity,” he says. “I want to give these student-athletes a fun and exciting  experience, while teaching them a work ethic that will help them down the road in whatever path they choose.” Gerrity is a Midlothian native, where he lives with his wife Kate and their four sons.

  • Margie Vaughan Snead ’85

    Girls Lacrosse  
    Margie Snead graduated from William & Mary in 1989 and currently serves as Trinity’s director of admission and program head for both the girls lacrosse and field hockey teams.     Coach Snead has led our Girls Lacrosse program to 7 Division II LIS Championships.
