Coach Brian Turnage with Mental Edge Athletics gives students a road map for personal growth and success
The fourth academic quarter of the school year is a time of joy and celebration, but can also be a time of stress as students prepare for cumulative assessments while balancing an increasingly crowded schedule.
To help students navigate these complexities, Chaplain Brian Griffen invited coach Brian Turnage, owner of Mental Edge Athletic Training, to share his approach to maximizing performance — whether academic, athletic or professional — through mental preparation and attitude.
Turnage encouraged each student to embrace a “process-based” mindset instead of a “results-based” one. Contrasting the two approaches, he pointed out that results — along with anything in the future is beyond one’s control. “You can impact those things, but you can’t control them,” he said. What we should focus on instead are all of those things we can control — attitude, mindset, body language, preparation, energy and emotion. And if we focus on that, we're focusing on everything that we can do to achieve the results that we want.”
Quoting the legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, he read: “Tomorrow is in large part determined by what you do today. So make today a masterpiece.”
To accomplish long-term goals and objectives, Turnage encouraged each student to create a written plan with daily checklists of those things we can control and taking a one-step-at-a-time approach. “Then it becomes a routine,” he said. “Once it becomes routine enough, it becomes a habit. Once you can turn your process into a habit, you're going to see a lot of success in life.”
